The resurrected company, named after the brand made popular in the early 1900s for electric vehicles, unveiled its first vehicle Wednesday night in the lobby of Detroit’s iconic Fisher Building, where the company’s new headquarters will be located. The vehicle, called the SP:01, is a limited-production two-seat sports car that the company will only produce 999 units of to build up its reputation and create a niche for itself. The vehicle -- starting at $135,000 -- is planned to spearhead a “diverse family” of all-electric production cars, including two other high-performance models that are planned to enter production by the end of 2014. SP:01, an acronym for “Sports Pure” and originally a company code name for “Sports Prototype 01,” features a 180-mile driving range, top speed of 155 miles per hour and goes 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds, making it the world’s fastest pure-electric production car. Hundreds of people attended the private unveiling Wednesday night in Detroit, including Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano and other Detroit public officials. Detroit Electric chairman, founder and CEO Albert Lam and Detroit Electric Head of Design Jerry Chung unveiled the vehicle following comments from Don Graunstadt, Detroit Electric CEO of North America Operations. Graunstadt previously told MLive.com that unveiling the vehicle in Detroit was very important to Lam, former Group CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group and Executive Director of Lotus Cars of England. The brand was revived by Lam in 2008. The vehicle is set to make its global public debut later this month at the Shanghai Motor Show, where officials will announce a “major partnership with a global carmaker.” Embedded above is a video of the unveiling, and continue to check back to MLive.com for more information on the company and vehicle.
