The 1.5 hour recharge is up to SIX times faster than that needed for a regular 240V supply from a conventional three-pin wall plug, which can take between eight and 10 hours to complete. The new system – implemented on the Volvo C30 Electric – utilises a 22kW fast-charger operating on a ‘three-phase’ electricity supply, the first on-board unit of its type to be fitted to a car. Volvo claims the vehicle has a total range of 164km (around 101 miles), but the new charging solution should dramatically improve the practicality of the vehicle – and EVs in general if other manufacturers should follow suit. Vice President Electric Propulsion Systems, Volvo Car Group, Lennart Stegland: “We’re proud to have developed this unique solution. By offering more usable hours a day, we’ve taken an important step towards making electric cars more viable as a commercial proposition, in both the private and public sectors. “Adding the innovative fast charging solution will radically improve the time and mileage for the daily usage of the car. “This will drastically improve the cost of ownership since the customer will now be able to drive many low cost kilometres per day. Even a quick 10-minute plug-in adds power for another 20 kilometres of driving.” While the real benefit is improved practicality through faster ‘refuelling’ times, it also means the performance of the car can be exploited further, as recharging is now not as big a limitation as before. The C30 Electric uses a new Siemens electric motor producing 120hp and 184lb ft of torque, sustained from just 1rpm to maximum revs. This means the car can leap from 0 to 70kph, or around 43mph (an unusual benchmark, we admit…) in 5.9 seconds.
