Wyatt Empie spent part of his class time at Monroe County Community College
on Friday inside a low-slung learning lab.

The student from Ida climbed behind the wheel of an experimental electric
vehicle he and fellow automotive engineering students cobbled together as a
potential entry in the Society of Automotive Engineers student electric car
competition.

MCCC has entered traditional internal combustion engine cars in SAE
competitions over the years, but this will be the school’s first electric
entry.

“We converted one of the old gas-fueled cars to electric,” explained Don
Kehrer, MCCC assistant professor of automotive engineering technology.
Students from various courses contributed to the effort because its
construction incorporated a range of disciplines, everything from welding to
electronics to computer technology to design.

“It truly represents kind of a symbiotic relationship between all the
programs,” said Tom Harrill, assistant professor of electronics and computer
technology. Sound Cloud MCCC Electric car gallery

A group of students who had been working on it lifted the 800pound vehicle
from a fabrication stand in a workshop outside the MCCC industrial
technology building and kept their fingers crossed that it would start and
be able to be testdriven in a nearby parking lot.

Looking a bit like a go-kart on steroids, the vehicle sprang to life with
the turn of a key. A siren like warning horn sounded and a red light mounted
on the rollbar began rotating.

“First thing, check the brakes because you want to make sure you can stop,”
advised Mr. Harrill.

The students then took turns taking spins around the parking lot, learning
that their electric creation did not behave like a traditional car,
especially when accelerating.

“It doesn’t work like a normal car,” Mr. Empie said. “You just push the gas
pedal down and keep it at steady pressure.” You Tube Video MCCC

builds speed as long as the pedal is pushed down. If the pedal is pushed too
far, the motor cuts out as a safety feature.

A 72 volt array of lithium iron phosphate batteries power the car and
theoretically can get it up to 70 mph. “We haven’t actually been able to
test that yet, but we think it will,” Mr. Empie said. The vehicle has a
range of about 40 miles before needing recharged.

Mr. Kehrer said the car is not quite ready for this year’s SAE competition
but likely will be tweaked in time for next year’s contest. Meanwhile, the
students involved in the project have gotten a taste of current changes in
the auto industry.
