Correct me if I'm wrong but before the release of every new ICE model, nearly all car manufacturers boast of the multiple millions/billions spent designing it.
This is recouped over years and I am sure if you divide the first years sales by this figure, the costs far outweigh the profit. R+D is expensive but I would bet that much of the work that went into that lovely 500E will roll over into future models. Just look at Tesla who now sell drive/battery packages to Mercedes for their Smart and Toyota for the RAV4 EV. And they have had to design their Model S from a clean sheet!
