Cheap, green energy has not yet made electric cars a staple for the Icelandic commuter. That might not be a bad thing as it is crucial to introduce them carefully and deliberately and furthermore, realistically assess driving conditions and economic gain. The viability of electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles is a special interest of Dr. Ágúst Valfells (Opens in new window), an associate professor at RU School of Science and Engineering and director of the REYST Graduate School of Sustainable Systems. He has been researching the potential of future electric vehicles with REYST students. According to Dr. Valfells it is vital to devise an accurate tool that can be helpful when introducing electric cars into the Icelandic traffic. As a part of their studies REYST students have been constructing models that can be used to determine where electric cars can be used and the advantages of substituting traditional petrol or diesel fuelled vehicles with cars that are powered with renewable energy sources. The models are being used to consult private companies and Reykjavík city council regarding the implementation of electric cars for public service. There is great interest in Iceland in using electric cars, a fact that is not surprising as almost all electricity used in the country comes from geothermal and hydropower and is economical for the Icelandic consumer.
