Thanks Bruce. I've had some really big guys comment on the spaciousness of my
i-MiEV as they gave the seats a workout this past weekend at the Mother Earth
News Fair. Surely you'v actually tried one on before declaring it too small?

Anyway, SEVA member Lee Colleton is taking his i-MiEV south for the BC2BC
rally, and he knows what he's up against, having crossed the main three
Cascades Range passes in a single day in the dead of winter last year!

Cheers,
Jay Donnaway

?For Fun?, or is there a purpose to the challenge/madness?

The above newswire mentions that EVs other than Teslas are going to
participate. But I thought has the public EVSE infrastructure improve that
much since the last time I looked at the route?

I spent (wasted) the afternoon, tracing the steps it would take for the
lowest common denominator EV: an iMiev with a 60mi-range, 3kW-onboard
charger
http://www.mitsubishicars.com/MMNA/jsp/imiev/12/showroom/overview.do
7 hours=3kw on-board charger

No one wants to come in empty, and running from Canada to Baja CA, Mx is
going to have some serious mountain climbing, so I target recharging every
50 miles.

I made a route map below, and have listed incrementally the stops I would
need to make if I were driving an iMiev (fantasy time because my big bod
won't fit in one).

With recargo and plugshare basically down for the count until their
programers fix them, it was an arduous task to get the data below.

When it became all too clear that with 7 hours to recharge at each stop
means days just to reach the Oregon/California border. That is not going to
work, and definably not be fun for the driver.

So, the iMiev and Leaf must be planning on using the public level-3 EVSE
that WA & OR have. I listed those L3 EVSE sites from the U.S. Fed Gov site,
until I hit a wall. The L3 EVSE stops at the OR/CA border.
And finding level-2 charging between OR/CA border going south along highway
5 was a serious challenge. Sure there were a few RV parks along the way that
you would have to live (and likely pay full $$ price for $4 worth of
electricity).

I did not find a public EVSE until I reached Winters, CA (west of Sacramento
& in the direction of the rally route).

So while the BC2BC-2013 blurb says other EVs are participating, really why
would they?
Because level-3 EVSE ends at the OR/CA border. It really points out this is
a Tesla EV EVent.

Conclusion/Bottom-line: Until NRG keeps their promise to install public
EVSE, or until some funding is found to install level3 & 2 EVSe like what WA
& OR already have, California has huge public EVSE gaps that EVs like the
Leaf & iMiev are not going to be able to use.
See below if want to look at what I found.
