A look at the Tesla Model S

Tesla Motors should have called its Model S sports sedan the Model W — for
wow.

I took the four-door, electric car for a spin around Boston yesterday,
putting the fully loaded model through its paces for a couple hours.

The fun started even before I got in the car. The recessed door handles
popped out thanks to two quick pushes on the key fob, shaped like a mini
Model S. By the time I sat down and looked around, the car was already on —
sensors in the driver’s seat combined with the key in the car, automatically
turned it on. When I put my foot on the brake for the first time, the car
was ready to drive. No buttons to push, no key to turn, just sitting and
hitting the brake.

The car was a blast to drive. Acceleration was quick and smooth, and it felt
like rushing downhill on a roller coaster. Telsa says the Model S goes 0 to
60 mph in 4.2 seconds, and that is not hard to believe.

The most impressive part, to me, is the Model S felt like a driveable
smartphone, not a car. The massive 17-inch HD multi-touch screen on the
front panel includes music, navigation — Google Maps is built in — and
climate control, but it also let me create profiles to save my seat and
steering wheel adjustments, music preferences and more. There are two USB
ports that can be used to play music.

Best of all, the software is still being updated. Because the car comes with
3G, Tesla can push software updates to every one of its cars. One recent
update added an option to let the driver creep forward when their foot is
taken off the brake.

Needless to say, it blew my 2004 Toyota Corolla — featuring a tape deck —
out of the water.
