On the Prius is that the *internal* beeper (ie it sounds *inside* the
car)?
That is imho the right place - it is the driver that should be aware
that he/she needs to go carefully and give way to *every* other type of
traffic while backing up. Not annoy every bystander (and wake nightshift
people sleeping in the whole neighborhood) as an attempt of
blame-shifting from driver attention to
"go-out-of-my-way-because-I-cannot-bother-to-look".

Full disclosure: I was almost mowed down by an angry young woman,
backing up out of a parking slot at a local bank while I rode my bike
across said parking lot annex driveway, to reach the same bank. She
never realized that she should give way and drove like it. When I called
her on not looking whether she could safely back out, she yelled that I
should not be so nasty to her. Yeah, right.
Not sure that a beeper in her car would have made her look any better
though. Traffic school might be in order, but she had pulled out before
I even realized to look at her license plate.

My brother got a brand new Prius, and the first thing I noticed is a
quite
loud backup alarm. I like that I can turn the noise off on my 2011 Leaf.
Nissan should have kept that option.
