What would have happened if GM’s EV1 electric car wasn’t killed in 2003?
Electric drag car racer, John Wayland, aka Plasma Boy, brings this question
to light with the EV2, a second generation electric vehicle with parts from
the EV1 fitted into a Honda Insight Hybrid. For Wayland, the EV2 is a way to
resurrect the storied EV1 and show the world what could have been if GM had
not abandoned its electric vehicle program so quickly. Silver Streak, which
is the name of Wayland’s creation, is capable of going as far as 400 miles
on a single charge!

The story of the first electric car, the EV1, is documented in the movie Who
Killed the Electric Car?. GM produced 1,117 EV1s between 1996 and 1999. But
in 2003, the company took them back and crushed them. A few cars, about 40,
were spared and sent to universities and research centers, but with the
controllers, main drive, brakes and power steering removed. Over the years,
a couple of these vehicles have been restored and made operational again.

Wayland’s EV2 uses the shell of a Honda Insight, which was the first mass
market hybrid car in the US and has a drivetrain weighing only 1,800 pounds.
He is using the EV1's transaxle and motor, and more modern lithium-ion
batteries from Dow Kokam. The 71.5 kWh of batteries can power the vehicle
for up to 400 miles on a single charge, according to Wayland.

“I’m flipping the bird to GM for crushing the EV1, and doing the same to
Honda for making fun of electric cars when they introduced the Insight,”
Wayland says about why he embarked on the EV2 project, which has been in
progress since 2011. It is about 80% complete and is expected to debut in
August or September this year.
