The VW e-Golf and e-Up will make their public debuts at the 2013 Frankfurt
motor show.

Volkswagen will give two new electric cars their public debut at the
Frankfurt motor show next month: the e-Golf and e-Up are powered purely by
electric motors and production versions of both will go on sale in 2014.

The e-Golf is powered by a 114bhp electric motor that develops 199lb ft of
torque from standstill. VW quotes a 0-62mph time of 10.4 seconds.

Top speed restricted to 87mph and the car's maximum range is 118 miles.

The e-Up has an electric motor that develops 155lb ft of torque and peak
power of 81bhp. It's powered by a lithium-ion battery that's mounted under
the car's floor.

Volkswagen quotes a maximum range of 160km (99 miles), and says that the
e-Up can be recharged to up to 80 per cent of its energy storage within 30
minutes.

VW has confirmed that the e-Up will be available to order from autum 2013
and that a production version will go on sale in early 2014. The E-Golf will
go on sale later in the year.

The e-Up consumes 11.7 kWh of electricity per 100km, Volkswagen says, while
the e-Golf, consumes 12.7 kWh. Using German electricity prices, it says that
driving 100km (62 miles) costs about £2.60 in the e-Up and about £2.84 in
the e-Golf.

Both new models look much like other Golf or Up, although both electric
versions get slightly different bumper designs that incorporate LED running
lights, blue exterior trim details and bespoke alloy wheels. The Golf also
gets full LED headlights – the first of the brand's cars to do so.

More details of the VW e-Up and e-Golf will be revealed at the Frankfurt
motor show on September 10.
