I don't see it as "range", but usage. I have never gone the total
distance that a set of batteries can go... that would be foolish.
That's what I've learned as well. Even if "it's only another mile home",
when I run low on charge, I've learned stop. Find an outlet to charge,
or let it rest an hour or two to recover, or just park it and walk.
Driving that last mile on a dead pack is going to do serious damage. Are
you willing to lose $100 or even $1000 for the damage to the pack for
that last mile?
I live in a small town, all the EVs I have built for my self never go
the total range, in fact I drive so little mileage I charge on the
week ends.
Luckily, that has always been my situation as well. I've always lived
3-10 miles from work, so I could easily do my daily commute even with
lead-acid batteries. I would often recharge only every other day, or
just do a brief "opportunity charge" to 80% or so, and then a full
equalization charge only on the weekends.
if a cycle is a charge/discharge, then by rights I only have to charge
52 times a year.
That can be true as well. Batteries last much longer if you don't
discharge them as deeply.
If your charger is such that is slightly damages the pack on each charge
cycle (typical of cheap simple chargers), you may be better off only
charging once a week instead of daily. Just don't discharge the pack
deep enough to harm it more from the deep discharge than the daily
charging would do.
Lead-acids don't like to be left idle in a discharged state. With them,
it's better to charge it back up to at least 80% state of charge each
day. But this doesn't seem to be necessary for other types of batteries.
