Most people in the U.S. have probably never seen a Nissan Leaf electric car.

But Silicon Valley is different--it's crammed with plug-in electric cars,
especially Teslas--and now it's got its own electric-car mystery.

As longtime reader Anton Wahlman points out, a blue 2012 Nissan Leaf has now
been parked for several months on Palo Alto's main drag, El Camino Real.

It's easy to spot: It's missing its driver's door.

The car is located just south of Charleston Road, where McLaren and Volvo
dealerships and a Tesla Store are located.

The car may have been there as long as six months, Wahlman says, certainly
more than three months.

He wonders whether this car is the same one that was a familiar site in and
around Palo Alto. That one had no doors at all. None.

Wahlman said it seemed to be occupied by one or more college
students--perhaps from nearby Stanford University--whenever he saw it.

And, he said, he saw it literally hundreds of times from early 2012 through
the start of this year that he saw it on the street.

So in the Silicon Valley spirit of crowdsourcing answers to problems, we're
throwing this one out to our readers.

Does anyone know why the doorless Leaf shown in the photos has been sitting
on the street for several months?

Is it the same car as the blue Leaf with no doors at all?

What happened to the door(s) and why were they removed in the first place?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Palo Alto, CA: Is it legal to drive a Nissan leaf without doors?

I called the Palo Alto police department before taking the doors off of my
new electric golf cart (2012 Nissan leaf). I obtained verbal permission from
the sergeant and he said that it was legal as there "is no difference
between a jeep and a Nissan leaf."

Over the last three weeks, I have been pulled over four times for probable
cause, but today the police sergeant that pulled me over strongly advised
that I put the doors back on. After doing some research, he concluded: It's
legal for motorcycles & off-road vehicles, like jeeps, not to have doors,
but normal vehicles need to have them.

Here's are two lists of offenses from the California DMV web site:

It seems very likely that the officers could have easily ticketed you for
offenses #'s 24002(a) and 24002(b) and been in safe territory. The Nissan
Leaf is not equipped with a roll cage in the same manner that certain models
of Jeep are and would become unsafe in the event of an accident, particularly
a side impact.

Frankly (as an aside) it is very odd that the major concern of driving your
Nissan without doors would be the legality of the act. It seems that you are
forgetting or ignoring the more obvious issues of:

Injury - Without doors , in a car which is lower profiled than many SUVs
and trucks not having doors would mean that any side impact would result in
the driver or the passenger being struck directly the vehicle which hit you.
This would mean severe injury or death for the car's occupants. There's also
the fact that without a roll cage in the Nissan Leaf any accident which
resulted in the vehicle rolling would throw the occupants from the car,
either completely or just partially. Again, severe injury or death would be
the result.

Insurance - While it may be "legal" to operate your Nissan in such a
manner, if you are in an accident and you file an insurance claim, you may
find that your insurer fights you tooth and nail to prevent themselves from
having to pay your claims for the vehicle or your medical expenses. Let's
not even imagine what might happen if you have a passenger or passengers in
your car when/if it was hit. Suffice it to say that if you lived, you would
almost certainly face wrongful death lawsuits from the passenger's families
and you may be sued by their insurers to recoup the costs of paying their
life insurance claims.

Perhaps you might want to really sit down and really consider this idea
again. The downsides are so numerous that they really eclipse any possible
