Electric and hybrid cars are attracting a lot of interest now.

Of course, electric cars are not new. The power source is as old as cars
themselves, as early experimenters tried out different ways to power and
move their vehicles with any fuel that could be contained and transported.

So we have the two book ends of the electric saga — what fewer people know
about are the points along the way.

Here is a different kind of hybrid.

A Yardney Electric plaque on the front of a Renault Dauphine, and our
Providence Journal library stamp of Nov. 17, 1967, help to make the trail of
breadcrumbs to magazine articles and manuals online.

Yardney Electric, a New York electronics manufacturer (note the license
plate) briefly marketed a car that was a 1967 Renault Dauphine with the
powerplant swapped out with Yardney Electric innards. A hybrid of a
different kind.

The original caption keeps it simple:

The Dauphine is introduced by a Yardney man.

Other photos from around this time show engine bays full to the top with
fuel cells, so this light chassis must be stuffed with batteries! There is
no indication what this event was, or where it was. Or what the other man
was doing on the motorbike.

But it’s clear that there were people who spent the better part of the
century thinking the problem over.

CarsJournal Archives is an occasional feature that brings selected photos
out of the Providence Journal’s archives. There is often only very limited
information available about the photograph. If you have more information,
please contact pconstan @providencejournal.com , and be sure to put
“CarsJournal Archives” in the subject line.
