BMW could revive its Mini E electric car, according to BMW Blog, as the
carmaker looks to expand the use of its i3 electric drivetrain.

The limited production Mini E was launched in 2009 as a research vehicle and
used extensively in road trials across Europe, including the CABLED
programme here in the UK. These trials help inform BMW’s development of its
first publicly-available electric car; the i3 supermini launched in the UK
this month.

Mini E on the road

According to the blog, the Mini E—made from a regular Mini hatchback and
transformed into a two-seater to accommodate the battery pack—was hugely
popular and despite the limited practicalities of this early EV car, more
than 1,800 individuals and businesses applied to take part in field trials
of just 450 models.

Mini’s third-generation hatch which launches next spring, holds the promise
of an electric version. Built on BMW’s new UKL1 platform which will be used
to underpin the entire Mini range, the platform is flexible enough to
accommodate various drivetrains including hybrid and electric set-ups.

Brand manager Peter Schwarzbauer is believed to have told the blog that
electrifying future Mini models is part of the strategy: “It fits perfectly
with the brand, and I am convinced that we will offer a suitable solution.”

BMW Blog even suggests that the larger Clubman model could be the prime
candidate for electrification.
