Same for me. My local metals recycler *buys* the batteries from all the local stores. If I take them there directly and avoid the middlemen, I get more from them. It was about $5 per battery the last time I went (and a bit more for golf cart batteries; they pay by the pound)

Last time I sold lead batteries, a year or two ago, the salvage/recycling yard paid about $25 for GCs, about 50 pounds. Battery retailers were paying about $9 for any size "core" batteries. Around here, it is worth your while to save your heavy batteries for the salvage yard and use your lawn mower batteries to avoid the core charge on new batteries.
