Anxiety is an interesting beast. It can be self-nurtured, or taught as a
child.
I am reminded of a different and non-EV related experience, that may
explain better.
Late in my life I was lucky enough to hook-up with a gal that had
similar interests, yet to keep it interesting, she and I had our
differences: I was a Silicon Valley guy, and she was a Central Valley
gal. When she thought our relationship had been long enough, she decided
to have me meet her folks (Uh oh, ... no wait it gets better ... just
trust me ... ).
She was raised in almond orchard country near Escalon, CA (~100 miles
west of Silicon Valley). I grew up around the fruit orchards of Santa
Clara Valley, which quickly got paved over to build Silicon Valley on
top of all that great soil.
We used an ice to drive out to her parent's home which is surrounded by
almond orchards still (California's Central Valley helps feed the
world). On the long trip, she coached me on a few things I should know
to do so I do not look or seem like such an outsider. I was willing to
make the effort since me being a svelte 6'6" while they were in the 5'
stature range could not help but make me 'stand-out' where I was or what
I did.
One thing was, I was not to pronounce almonds as I had been raised to,
like: al·monds but, pronounce them like all the other almond growers do:
Aa-mins (rhythms with famines and stressing the Aa). This was a clue
that these farmer-folk were pretty-set in their own-old-ways.
One thing she did not prep me for was her parents' preoccupation with
ALWAYS having at least a half a tank of gasoline ... at all times, no
matter what. It did not matter that there were gasoline stations every
couple of miles, some that were open 24hrs, and that I told them I knew
my ice: how many miles I had gone, how many miles I knew I had left, and
my gas gauge (some gauges are quite inaccurate near empty, mine wasn't).
When I would drive them all, their daughter trusted me, though a concern
on her face was showing more and more with each time her parents
mentioned their angst, and how foolish they all would look on the side
of the road out of gas.
I could see that for me to show them all that I knew best was not in my,
nor her best interest, so I pumped a few gallons in to relief that
tension. But because it took more than one reminder of their angst, I
was chided for how much gas was still in the tank on the rest of the
trip ... (we're not going to run out are we?).
Mentioning my metal-ability to be able to calculate on the fly of how
many miles I had gone and how many miles I had left, was just not
appreciated. They felt they were right and that, was-that (the
end-of-it).
So, people can have gas-tank-anxiety. That fear has been around a lot
longer than the media's over blown coverage of their range-anxiety.
Even when I went through that experience, I only thought to myself, they
are what they are, and God loves them.
So when a person in the public I am talking to about plugins is pretty
set in their ways about their fears, it doesn't do any good to try to
change them. I have found it is best to respect what they are, how they
think, and offer alternatives, like sticking with their gas car.
But I end the conversation with, " ... but don't complain at the pump
with the gas prices keep going up and up ..."
Sometimes that does the trick of getting them to change their own mind,
as the holy-dollar is more important them than those fears.
A different experience with other person's EV range-angst is somewhat
defused when I prep the journey by reminded them, "I know my EV" ...
"Trust me, I know what I am doing" (said with a smile).
