New design: The Nissan taxi

Car giant Nissan unveiled its new black cab for London today - hailing it as
a key “stepping stone” towards the capital’s first all-electric taxi.

Styled at the firm’s Paddington design studios that also created the
top-selling QashQai and Juke models, the new NV200 cab currently has a
petrol engine.

But by the end of 2015 it will have a clean, zero-emission electric motor to
combat air pollution in UK cities. It remains to be seen whether London -
which has not yet hit targets for providing electric vehicles charging
points - will be ready too.

The new cab has seating for five including two flip-down rearward-facing
seats, access for wheelchair users and sliding doors to help passengers get
in and out in tight spots.

The petrol-engined version of the Nissan will go on sale in the capital this
December((2014)), costing around £30,000.

Today Nissan said its key goal was to have its electric version on sale
“before any other manufacturer”.

This will put it head-to-head with the ... Metrocab [pih] from Ecotive and
Frazer-Nash Research, recently revealed by the Standard.

The new Nissan, unveiled at the O2 Arena, has a 25ft turning circle rule,
enabling it to perform swift manoeuvres.

Parts for the NV200 are being built in Barcelona but it will be assembled in
Britain, at a location to be announced. It will be sold by a Nissan dealer
at Canary Wharf.

Nissan says there are currently 22,000 black cabs in London but that many
will soon be forced off the road by tough new emissions regulations. Nissan
wants a significant proportion of the market this opens up.

The NV200 is already in use in New York and Tokyo but has been redesigned
for London to more closely resemble the traditional black cab ‘face’, with
bigger headlights, prominent ‘taxi’ sign and big front grille.
