In the EU we do both at public charging locations. For AC power levels at
or below 22kW we have a Type 2 (³mennekes²) socket at the Charging Station
and expect the driver to carry a cable to match their car. For example, a
Leaf driver will carry a Type 2 (³mennekes²) to Type 1 (³J1772²) cable.

However, for power levels above 22kW the Charging Station has a Type 2
cable permanently attached and the car is expected to have a Type 2
socket. Cars like the BMW i3 and Tesla Model S use a Type 2 socket in the
car so this is only a problem for older cars like the Leaf with Type 1
sockets.

The advantage of Type 2 is it¹s support for 3 Phase charging which is very
widely deployed in consumers homes across the EU.
