Nissan is planning to blow away the putt-putt perception of electric power at next week’s Clipsal 500 when it unveils the maker’s battery-driven LEAF Nismo RC in an exhibition race against a V8 Supercar and a Nissan GT-R road car. The all-electric, zero-emission and virtually silent car’s appearance will be its first in Australia and a rare global run since it was launched at the New York Auto Show in 2011. Nissan V8 Supercars driver Rick Kelly will pilot the revolutionary racer — which, with no exhaust, reportedly makes little more than tyre noise — while motorsport commentator Neil Crompton and Adelaide racer Samantha Zanotto will share duties in the GT-R. “It’s going to be an honour to be the first person to drive the Nissan LEAF Nismo RC in Australia,” Kelly said. “It’s a crazy time at the moment, having come from Bathurst (12-hour race) in the GT-R, then testing our Altima V8 Supercar, and now I’m going to get the chance to drive one of Nissan’s game changers. “The LEAF Nismo RC is a pure race car. It’s not going to sound like the racing cars we’ve all come to know, but the level of detail that Nismo has gone to in this car is amazing. “I think the Adelaide fans will be blown away by its speed and I’m really excited to get behind the wheel of it at the Clipsal 500.” The electric racer weighs just 925kg, just over half a GT-R’s 1740kg. It boasts a carbon-fibre body and LED headlights, and has been recorded as achieving 0-100km/h in 6.85s with a top speed of 150km/h. The Nissan Time Attack will be on track next Saturday and Sunday.
