EVLN: Billionaire Spielberg drives his Tesla-S to high-powered lunch
]

The above news piece mentions that of all the vehicles an ultra wealthy
person could get, he chose a Tesla.

I have posted in the past of the ultra expensive EVs, but with little
readership response from either the evdl members or from outside lurkers
that find what I post on the evdl nabble archive. Spielberg could easily
drive an EV that is worth five to ten times more than Tesla-S, but chose
to drive what is hip in Hollywood right now, a Tesla-S (if you can
afford it). Perhaps there is a high price to pay for being that wealthy,
and driving a Tesla, allows him the luxury of being treated more that a
regular person (?).

...
And that caveat, if you can afford it, is important.
A few days before I made the above post, I was out-n-about getting some
tasks done (a weekly occurrence for me, as now an ol' guy: I do not get
out as much as before), when I saw more and more Leaf EVs all around me.
They were on the road turning left in front of me, parked in the parking
structure and parking lots, at the shopping center, ... it was exciting
to see.

I had previously posted that the hi-tech and bio-medical companies near
me on the northern edge of Silicon Valley had discounted employee
EV-lease deals that made it just too affordable to pass up. So, I could
drive around their parking lots and see beau-coup EVs and other plugins.
And although the SF Bay are is dotted with a mixture of both affluent
and get-your-hands-dirty working-class communities/cities, there were
few Tesla's and mostly plugins in the $40k range (Leaf or Focus EVs, or
a Volt or Energi pih).

The (caveat) point being it is natural that there are going to be more
of the lower cost/more-affordable plugins on the road than Tesla's
current price range. I really look forward to seeing Tesla-E's out all
around me as well.

...
Sometimes it is hard for an EVangel to restrain the EV-zeal. I had
mentioned that the deep-blue Leaf street-parked in front of a Hospital
building to a passerby (he happened to be a 30-something Latino man). He
smiled as he had no idea what it was, surprised they were at a more
affordable price than the $100k Tesla prices he knew/heard of, and was
pleased they were out in society.

But my day ended on a lesser note, as a man and wife came into the
grocery store parking lot in a beautiful new huge-puffy GM truck. The
kind that serves double duty as both a work vehicle (cargo capability in
the back), and extended cab for carrying the family around (like an
SUV). This type of vehicle is king in the Latino community (there is a
large Latino community where I am).

As I was heading out, and they were coming in, I greeted him, breaking
the ice with how nice his ice looked, and he was polite. I mentioned
that there was an Electric Leaf in the parking lot, hoping to only
briefly make him aware of the Electric revolution going on around him,
and then quickly let him go about his business. Although he said "oh?",
he immediately got his business card out of the truck, and handed it to
me, telling me of his tree trimming service (like if this old-guy is
going to talk to/bother me, I am going to make it worth my time by
promoting my small business). I continued to smile and we party
cordially, him thinking I would bring him more business, but me thinking
too-bad he could care less about Electrics.

His business was successful enough for him to afford a new GM
work/family vehicle. So, he could easily afford a plugin. But is there a
plugin vehicle that not only fits their daily life's needs, but would be
acceptable to peer-pressure.

If you think about, the working-man's/person's vehicle market has not
been tapped at all for plugins. Huge vehicles scream the need for a
plug-in-hybrid design. What would make more sense than to have a better
fuel mileage work/family truck or SUV pih with at least a 50mi e-range?
...

Well, an EVangel can only hope that I will live long enough to see that
market cracked wide open to plugins as well.
