The bus is now on its way to the Fresno County school district, while another three buses will follow, all of which are estimated to save the district $10,000 each school year in fuel and maintenance. Powered by technology from Motiv Power Systems of Foster City, Calif., the SST-e bus is an electric version of the SST model school bus built by New York-based manufacturer Trans Tech. Unveiled for the first time last October, the SST-e utilizes a Ford E450 cutaway chassis equipped with Motiv's electric power train. Each bus has a range of 80 to 100 miles and holds 25 students or 18 students with a wheelchair lift with configurable track seating for up to three wheelchairs. "Kings County Unified School District has taken major strides to reduce diesel particulate emissions by as much as 85 percent," said Jason Flores, the district's transportation director, in a release. "Going electric with these new green school buses is just one more important step in KCUSD's ongoing portfolio of measures to protect our children, serve our community, and be good stewards of our environment." The first two buses were funded in part by a grant from the California Air Resources Board under its Air Quality Improvement Program's Electric School Bus Demonstration Project. The last two were covered by Federal highway dollars. All had additional funding support from the Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project available to any California school district to offset the cost of zero-emission buses. Kings Canyon Unified School District operates 19 schools enrolling some 10,000 students throughout the Reedley and Orange Cove areas.
