Not too long ago, an evdl member who lives in SF, CA posted an inquiry
on if their Leaf EV would make it to Santa Cruz, CA, see map
http://goo.gl/maps/TjTbm

Even though I have many years of EV driving experience, and I posted
that they should stop at the last level-3 EVSE before heading up and
over the Santa Cruz mountains (there is only level-2 in Santa Cruz, see)
http://www.afdc.energy.gov/locator/stations/results?utf8=%E2%9C%93&location=los+gatos%2C+ca&filtered=true&fuel=ELEC&owner=all&payment=all&ev_dc_fast=true&radius=true&radius_miles=20
as mountainous driving with the road-warrior nut-jobs on that stretch of
highway can eat more power than on flat highways).

A customer that sees the need of that trip on a regular basis could use
a Leaf with the larger range and if Nissan offered both their 24kWh
model and a 48kWh model like the way Tesla offers different sized pack
models/trims, see
http://www.teslamotors.com/models/design
The customer could opt to pay more for the added range Leaf model/trim,
or just go with the standard 75mi model/trim and keep their EVSE look-up
sites/apps handy.

If that evdl member had a 150mi Leaf EV, the light level-2 charge they
would get for the hours they were at Santa Cruz would ensure their
returning home without the need to stop and recharge before reaching
home.

Different people have different needs, and some are willing to pay for a
larger range Leaf EV.

I can see a great market for a cheaper 75-80 mile leaf but a 150 mile
version suits who? At 80 miles almost everyone's in city needs are met
and an occasional quick charge or a plug-in at work will cover almost
everyone else.

So, what does 150 mile get you? Road trips? It still would require
stopping every 2 hours at best for a half hour or so to charge. And
that's assuming perfectly spaced quick charges.

Now, jump to the tesla range and you have a different story. Well, who
knows, maybe i'm wrong...
