A partnership between the electric companies Enel, the city and the association “Corila” together with private businesses from the boating industry have launched a new project. The new boat blends high technology allowing you to navigate through the canals using photovoltaic cells placed on the roof. According to the representative of Enel – Fulvia Fazio, the new transportation could be the next big thing. Currently similar boats are tested in Brazil water taxi services. The first 100% ecological boat was presented at the Genoa Boat Show in 2010, and since then it has attracted a lot of interest in the marine industry, mainly because of the many possibilities and uses in tourist contexts, and cities like Venice. Among its main features, matching the need of the Lagoon, is quiet operation of the vehicle, with almost no vibrations and exhaust. The cost for charging the boat is also insignificant. In the warmer months, when the radiation of the sun is higher, the solar panels generate the electricity needed to sail. In the absence of sunny days, you can always draw electricity from an electric outlet, spending about 1 euro for a refill. The big issues as of right now is that there are only about 1400 stations for recharging this type of boats around the country but many more will be needed to supply the electricity for the boat. As of right now the solar-electric boats in Venice may sound like something from the future, but the enormous interest of business investors may bring the future of this vehicle closer to reality.
