Nissan is making electric vehicle ownership a little more attractive with
its “No Charge to Charge” program, which will provide 2014 Nissan Leaf
owners with two years of free public charging thanks to an all-access
EZ-Charge card.

This promotion will launch starting July 1 in the Nissan Leaf’s 10 top
markets—San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Nashville,
Phoenix, Dallas-Fr. Worth, Houston, and Washington D.C.—which on their own
make up 80 percent of all Nissan Leaf sales. Leaf buyers in these markets
will receive an EZ-Charge card which provides free access to public chargers
that are part of the ChargePoint, Blink, AeroVironment, and NRG eVgo
networks.

Public charging typically carries a per hour cost and sometimes requires a
membership card to use, so this promotion should make it much easier and
cheaper for Leaf owners to juice up their cars on the go. After the initial
rollout, Nissan plans to offer the free EZ-Charge card in at least 15 more
markets over the course of the next year. Buyers who purchased their Nissan
Leaf any time after April 1, 2014, also receive an EZ-Charge card.

The 2014 Nissan Leaf EV carries a starting price of $29,830. It has an
EPA-estimated electric range of 84 miles, and its lithium-ion battery pack
receive up to an 80 percent charge in 30 minutes at public charging stations
with the optional quick charge port. Otherwise, a full charge takes around
five hours using a 240-volt outlet.

Nissan will provide two years of free public charging for customers who buy
or lease a new Leaf electric car in the top 25 sales markets, including
Nashville, beginning July 1.

Under the “No Charge to Charge” program, consumers will receive a special
EZ-Charge access card with the purchase or lease of a Leaf that allows them
to recharge the car’s lithium-ion battery pack at public charging stations
operated by a variety of vendors, including ChargePoint, Blink Network
(CarCharging Group), AeroVironment and NRG eVgo.

The EZ-Charge card also will be made available to existing Leaf
owners/lessees, who will have to pay for the recharging, but will be able to
use the single charge card at any of the chargers operated by the program’s
participants.

It’s similar to occasional promotions by new-car dealers that give buyers
free gasoline for a specific period, although with the Leaf, the No Charge
to Charge program does not cover the costs of home charging. Most Leaf
owners opt for home-charging systems that allow them to recharge in their
own garages, paying for the electricity along with their regular household
electric bills.

“ ‘No Charge to Charge’ and EZ-Charge are a winning combination, making
public charging free and easy for new Leaf buyers,” Fred Diaz, a Nissan
senior vice president for sales and marketing, said during an announcement
of the program at the New York auto show. “Public charging is an important
way to provide added range confidence to EV buyers and persuade more
shoppers to join the more than 110,000 Leaf drivers around the world.”

Besides Nashville, the program will be available beginning July 1 in San
Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Ore., Phoenix,
Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and Washington, D.C., and the free charging
privileges will be “provided retroactively to buyers in these markets who
purchased their Leaf on or after April 1,” said the Franklin-based Nissan
North America Inc.

Fifteen more cities will be added to the program over the following year,
the company said. Details about the expansion will be announced closer to
each area’s launch date.

Nissan said the EZ-Charge card program will be managed by NRG eVgo, with
support from ChargePoint, CarCharging and AeroVironment.

“Nissan’s commitment to mass-market electric cars is matched by our
commitment to increase charging infrastructure for Leaf owners,” said
Brendan Jones, Nissan’s director of electric vehicle infrastructure and
strategy. “EZ-Charge is a natural progression of our multi-pronged
commitment to developing EV charging at workplace campuses, at Nissan Leaf
dealerships and in the communities where Leaf drivers live and work.”

Leaf models sold in the United States are assembled at the Nissan plant in
Smyrna, which also makes the lithium-ion batteries for the cars.

Nissan will expand free* charging incentive to 25 Leaf markets
New EV buyers can use EZ-Charge card for two years
By Sebastian Blanco Apr 16th 2014 ... Nissan has proof that giving away a
bit of electricity makes buying a new Leaf all the more enticing. Thanks to
a deal that offers free charging to some Leaf owners in Texas, one dealer
there claims his Leaf sales have tripled. We don't see national sales
climbing quite that high starting July 1 2014, but an announcement made
today at the New York Auto Show will likely give the EV a boost ...
