Some of you may find the comments of Charles Steinmetz, the originator of a
lot of fundamental AC theory, about the advantages and disadvantages of
electric vs. gasoline powered vehicles interesting:

written document.

In the same paper he goes into using a battery to excite the windings of a
series/shunt motor to add regenerative braking and get a better power curve.

His life story is pretty interesting also:

He wrote early texts for electrical engineering principles and started the
first EE college  curriculum in the US at Union College in upstate NY but is
not generally as well known as his contemporaries:  Edison, Tesla, and
Einstein.
