Hi Michael, I have an MTD mower too with transmatic transmission. I was puzzled by you saying it was so lossy so I'm glad you've resolved it.
Well maintained and adjusted I think it should actually be more efficient than the hydrostatic versions. The last one I saw of those even had a substantial fan attached to its pulley to keep the hydrostatic unit cool, which isn't a good sign.
