The mail format changed with last night's upgrade of the listserver
software.

With new mail security policies now in place at Yahoo, AT&T, AOL and
Microsoft, the former practice of the listserver using the sender's name as
FROM was causing problems. The listserver used to take the email address of
the sender and copy it into the FROM field in place of its own address (this
is called "address munging"). All listservers work this way - or rather
USED to work this way.

Yahoo changed their security policies in early April, and the others soon
followed.

After that, when the listserver forwarded messages from a Yahoo, AOL, AT&T
or Microsoft user to addresses in these same domains, their servers would
"think," "This message says it's from Yahoo, but it's not sent by a Yahoo
server - it's from evdl.org instead. Huh. Must be spam. Reject!"

A week or two ago, I noticed that users were starting to get suspended from
the list because their accounts were bouncing excessive amounts of mail. I
tried various fixes. The error message on one of the bounced messages led
me to the real reason, but it took a little while to get the fix in place.

With the modified list software, instead of sending a message from (for
example) [email protected], the listserver sends a message from
[email protected], on behalf of [email protected]. This is OK with Yahoo,
AT&T, AOL, and Microsoft, so the message gets delivered.

The reply-to field now contains both the list address and the message
originator's address, so replying to a message should still work as before.

This is a permanent change - or at least until some big mail operation
screws things up again and we have to find yet another workaround.
