Electric cars: Good progress, now it’s time to charge ahead
Posted by Letters Coordinator
Last week University of Washington students came in second place in a national competition to transform a stock car into a hybrid vehicle ["UW students take 2nd place in hybrid-car competition," The Today File, June 20].

Their victory over a dozen other colleges in the EcoCAR 2 challenge underlines the technological revolution that is helping to clean up our air and reduce our dependence on oil — the rise of electric vehicles. Today, America has more than 220,000 electric vehicles on the road. In just the last two years, annual sales of electric vehicles have increased by 500 percent.

That’s really good news. According to a new report, electric vehicles could prevent more than 360,000 metric tons of global warming pollution annually in Washington state by 2025. It’s time to charge ahead and make electric cars as convenient, affordable and widespread as cars currently powered by oil.

Washington should adopt the Zero Emission Vehicles program and continue to make it easier for people to own and drive electric cars. By committing to bold goals and expanding on the good policies we’ve already adopted, we can take clean cars to the next level. It’s time to charge ahead.
