Ask any marketing guy: slamming the other guy's product doesn't
automatically promote your competing one. This unfair measure, assuming
it's not defeated in court, will only result in a long-overdue driver
revolt in Britain, not in enhanced sales of electrics and hybrids. I
smell another big gain for the UK Independent Party in the next general
election, which might happen sooner than anyone expects.
It's just plain wrong: diesels are inherently cleaner than gas buggies,
and not just because they're thermodynamically more efficient. They
operate with excess air, which suppresses carbon monoxide and unburnt
hydrocarbon emissions. The EU politicians' emphasis on oxides of
nitrogen is pure fluff - NOx is dangerous in confined spaces, so you
need to worry about it in the LA basin or in Mexico City...and damn'
near nowhere else. Just another excuse for "revenue enhancement," i.e. a
driver shakedown.
