Welder Up does an E-Stopp electronic parking brake system showpiece

% Vegas Rat Rods (vrr) is a Discovery Channel (DC) TV show which seems to
include some auto shop creations with some reality-TV type of shop-drama in
the mix.

Summary: This episode is much less about an EV conversion as it is about a
hard-core ice-head shop that restores an old classic car enough to use as a
showcase car with an Electric drive system, with much more time and
creativity spent on its theme. Its eerie-creepy-gangster Frankenstein theme
is Electrifying (as in two Electric-chairs for front seats), and the
going-green part of this EV is mainly its eerie green paint job.

In the show, after the E-Stopp customer asked that his 1928 Buick be
Electric, the VRR owner said he had never made an Electric, and this would
be his first (a piston-head shop doing an EV).

New EV components would have cost vrr $16k. To save money, instead vrr
bought a local used 120VDC EV conversion for $9.5k to use its EV components
for their project.

Though not mentioned in the episode, some research showed the 1993 Toyota
Paseo converted EV vrr bought
http://evalbum.com/preview.php?vid=1088
was previously owned by actor Leslie Nielsen. Then later owned by a member
of the Las Vegas EAA Chapter lveva.org . Who had sold it to his son-in-law
when he bought a Volt phev/pih. Although his son-in-law initially wanted the
EV, he did not use it, and so sold it to vrr (with the Father-in-law not
being too happy about what ended up happening to his former EV).

When the EV conversion donor was sold it had 12 2-year-old 12V 100Ah gel
batteries, which gave at best a ~40 mile range in the converted sedan EV.
But there is no way the vrr EV project will get more than a 20 mile range
with all the inefficiencies of that 1928 Dodge.

The vrr shop-crew did do a nice job of stylize painting of the ADC 9" motor
which they married up to the 1928 Dodge transmission.

Throughout the episode the vrr shop-crew were vocal about disliking EVs as
they considered them as 'boring', "that's super lame", "an Electric car is
completely out of any of our realm" (clearly they knew nothing of nedra.com
).

Neither the former lveva owner nor his son-in-law were asked by vrr about
the EV. It is likely vrr had no idea, nor want to know of the history of the
EV donor (or of the friendly lveva.org members willing to give free EV
info). The vrr shop-crew did their conversion on their own.

When the vrr shop-crew began extracting the EV components from the donor EV
conversion, it was the vrr shop-crew exclaiming "We have a bunch of wires
here, "I hate wires!", "a big motor", and "I have no idea what I am doing".

After the vrr shop-crew had yanked everything they wanted from the EV
conversion donor, they then took out all their frustrations and hatred for
EVs by destroying the now gutted EV conversion donor.

One of the vrr shop-crew ran up and slammed his body up against the front
windshield leaving it smash-cracked. Other vrr shop-crew took huge shop
tools to the outside of the gutted EV donor, whacking away at it.

These violent segments in the show seemed quite contrived. Like when the
vrr shop-crew enjoyed using fuel to burn in a small bonfire, the
rotted/termite infested wood from the 1928 Dodge.

For all of vrr shop-crew's shown dislike of anything Electric, they had no
issue with one of their crew riding around in an Electric mobility chair
(some things Electric are considered acceptable, while highway-speed capable
EVs are not?).

The $29k vrr finished EV project was used as an E-Stopp showpiece vehicle
that would enhance the owner's sales. But as an EV ... yea, it will move but
not very far, nor fast.

Be sure to check out the images (below) to see the artist's creativity and
craft-work. It looks like the vrr shop-crew expressed some of their
delusional fears and hatred of EVs as part of the design and ornamentation.

Below are DC pages describing the episode, and links. DC wants $2 to see the
show, but the other videos are free. %

Electro Rod, Welder Up, Vegas Rat Rods, 1928 Buick, Electric Rod
Jonathan Mill was looking for a showpiece for the E-Stopp electronic parking
brake system he developed with his father in law, Larry Goodman. The debut
would take place during the SEMA 2013 show in Las Vegas.

Jonathan approached Steve with the idea of turning his 1928 Buick into an
electric powered rod. Challenge Accepted!

When the car arrived, it was in very rough shape. It was completely rusted
out and the wood frame these old Buick’s are known for, was completely
destroyed by termites. It took some time, but Steve convinced the crew that
they could polish this “Turd” into an incredible Mobster/Electric themed
masterpiece.

To start, all of the wood framing on the floor was replaced with metal and
the integrity of the vehicle was strengthened with additional metal bracing.
The interior was torn out and the body was given a much needed face lift.

To take the “Electric” theme to the next level, the seats were made to look
like electric chairs, complete with head pieces, gauges, and electrical
wires. The interior panels were designed to give the impression that you
have been locked in a padded cell. The roof of the vehicle was left in it's
original state, because it fit right in with the creepy theme. Steve chose a
“Frankenstein” theme for the exterior of the Buick.

It was painted green and the contours and lines of the body were highlighted
to create an aged look. The entire car was embellished with electrical
gauges, switches, knobs, and even glowing hands in hand cuffs.

The overall idea was to make the vehicle look as scary as possible and make
you think twice before touching it, for fear it would shock the crap out of
you! To keep the build within budget and the 10 day production schedule,
the decision was made to purchase a used electric car to use as a parts
donor.

The team was able to remove the electric motor from the donor and re-install
it into the 1928 Buick. They were also able to adapt the electric motor to
fit the 80 year old transmission with success. To fit the theme, Travis
painted the electric motor and lights were installed to create a glowing
effect.

The Finishing touch was an old trunk placed on the back. Once completed,
the 1928 Buick was the perfect showcase for the E-Stopp product.
Congratulations to Jonathan! He was named the 2013 Launch Pad winner at the
SEMA show for the E-Stopp brake system.
