Mine car is the last one on Bruce's list (Swift). It has about 5 years and around 35k miles on it. No issues with motor or controller in that time. I think EVWest has about as good of prices as anyone on AC. The only ones affordable to most mortals are the HPEVS motors/Curtis controllers. You won't get as much torque and power from the HPEVS AC motors as you will from a zilla 1k/Warp9. Depends on how fast acceleration you want. My car does 0 to 60 in 16 seconds. With one of the 9" HPEVS motors your VW would likely do a bit better than that, but the above DC combo would likely do more like 7-8 seconds with 1k Amps.
