Consumer Reports Revisits Tesla Model S, Highlights Glitches
By Stephanie Mlot August 12, 2014

The same outlet that named the Model S 2014's best overall vehicle has
chronicled various glitches in the luxury car.

Tesla's Model S electric car is by no means perfect, and it appears Consumer
Reports has finally gotten hip to that idea.

The same magazine that recently named the Model S 2014's best overall
vehicle this week published an article chronicling various glitches in the
luxury car.

"For its impressive performance in our tests, strong safety marks, and
decent reliability so far, the Model S earned Consumer Reports'
recommendation," reporter Gabe Shenhar wrote. "But over the last 15,743
miles, our test car has developed many minor problems that merit some
reflection."

One of those quirks—an issue with the automatic-retracting door handles—has
already been fixed via Tesla's over-the-air update.

Other headaches though, required manual labor, done almost entirely during
the car's annual service—when a company rep picks up your car, leaves a
loaner, and delivers the renovated vehicle.

But according to Consumer Reports, the Model S's center screen gave out
around 12,000 miles, "eliminating access to just about every function of the
car," including opening the charging port.

Shenhar also cited a creak in the passenger-side roof-pillar area, a broken
seat belt buckle, and worn-down front-bumper carrier hardware. A few
thousand miles more, and the front trunk lid wasn't responding to the
virtual release button, and the adapter for non-Tesla EV chargers fell
apart.

Still, Consumer Reports raved about the $637 maintenance bill, which
included replacement hardware and a new 12-volt battery, as well as
gratis-under-warranty work on the trunk and latest firmware.

Nextcar Bug artOverall, the Tesla Model S earned a big auto-reliability
survey score of "average," based on input from 637 owners of 2012 and 2013
models. Consumer Reports will re-analyze the vehicle in September.

"Given the number of bits and pieces Tesla has replaced on our car, it might
be tempting to guess that its reliability score will go down," Shenhar
wrote. "The reality is, it might—depending on the frequency and severity of
problems reported by our subscribers and whether they show that reliability
is below average."

Known for its Model S electric vehicle, Tesla has a few more tricks up its
sleeve, including the long-awaited next-gen Model X, expected early next
year, according to customer emails.

CEO Elon Musk did, however, recently confirmed that the company's next car
after the Model X CUV (crossover utility vehicle) will be called the Model
3, and will retail for $35,000.
