Remember Yamaha’s Tesseract? We would now like to introduce you to
Kawasaki’s Concept J. Concept J is a three wheel electric vehicle prototype
unveiled at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show that received great response from the
audience and Kawasaki fans world over. The concept J is a futuristic urban
personal transport vehicle that offers variable riding positions for the
rider better than the Batpod or the Tron Lightcycle.

In the Comfort Mode, the vehicle would offer a relaxed riding position for
city commuting with the rider in a conventional, upright riding position and
the adjustable track of the twin front wheels set wider for maximum
stability. In the Sport Mode, the adjustable track of the twin front wheels
go narrow and the overall riding stance becomes more sporting and
aerodynamic allowing the rider to be “as one” with the vehicle for fun,
sport riding. In fact, the vehicle just transforms its shape as per the
driving mode.

The Concept J is supposed to be powered by the Kawasaki’s proprietary
GIGACELL® battery, if the vehicle comes to production. GIGACELL® is the
next-generation high-capacity nickel-metal hydride battery composed of
individual cells that are connected in series at their cell walls, with the
front and rear surfaces becoming the positive and negative terminals,
forming a bipolar structure.

The novel concept that differentiates the GIGACELL from the current
cylindrical nickel-metal hydride batteries is the bipolar structure of the
cells. The conventional cylindrical nickel-metal hydride batteries consist
of rolled materials with separators between each set of positive and
negative electrodes. Because of this structure, it is difficult to cool down
the interior heat during rapid charges / discharges, whereas in GIGACELL®
inside each cell, pre-formed strips of positive and negative electrodes are
inserted into the two sides of a pleat-folded separator (a zig-zag shaped
separator). The patent application US 20100112427 A1 entitled Battery and
heat exchanger structure thereof corresponds to this concept.

The patent US 8158278 B2 entitled Sealed battery having rectangular frame
member and battery module using same discloses a sealed rectangular battery
excellent in volumetric efficiency and pressure resistance. The sealed
rectangular battery includes an electrode group having a positive electrode
and a negative electrode and a cell casing for accommodating therein the
electrode group and an electrolyte solution. This patent discloses the
entire construction of the GIGACELL® battery module.

The patent application US 20130257371 A1 entitled Battery module charging
system discloses the charging system specifically designed for the GIGACELL®
battery.

The patent application US 20120223576 A1 entitled Battery system, power
supply system for electric railcars, and battery module discloses a battery
system configured by connecting a plurality of battery modules in series and
each of the plurality of battery modules are configured by stacking a
plurality of unit batteries. The patent application discloses a large scale
battery system for being used as battery power systems for railways.

In addition to the Concept J, the GIGACELL® battery can be installed on
board streetcars (Light Rail Vehicles), inside the battery power system
(BPS) for railways, or can be used for stabilizing output electricity
generated from natural energies such as wind and solar power.
