Kawasaki’s intriguing variable-architecture J-Concept electric vehicle which
initially revealed as a digital animation at Tokyo last year has finally
been presented in a tangible form at this year’s Intermot show in Cologne,
Germany. It is still unclear whether the house of Akashi has any plans to
actually build such a - let’s call it so – scooter, but looking back to all
the new things Kawasaki introduced recently, it would not surprise anyone to
see the J rolling down the street in a couple of years or so.

While variable-architecture vehicles are not exactly a new thing in the
business, it looks like the J-Concept is a real step forward towards the day
such machines will finally roam the streets. The J-Concept can alter its
track, wheelbase and riding position according to the type of road and
speed, offering both a sporty stance and a more relaxed, upright one.

At the same time, the Kawasaki J-Concept may be the platform Akashi will
rely on to test the capabilities of the GIGACELL battery pack. The GIGACELL
is a high-capacity nickel metal hydride battery which is said to surpass any
existing similar power pack and which can reportedly store large amounts of
energy, possibly becoming one of the most convenient choices in the electric
vehicle industry.

Kawasaki presented the J-Concept at the Intermot, but no demonstration of
its capabilities was made as far as we know. Still, as far out as the J may
seem, it will definitely be used as the basis for future vehicles, as
three-wheeled electric mobility seems to become more and more popular with
each passing year.
