They’re a rare site, but on Sunday, the City of Moreland will be inundated with electric cars, for the Australian Electric Vehicle Association’s expo. The location was chosen by the association because the municipality has the most electric car charge stations provided by a council than any other in Australia. There are seven charging stations across the municipality; six of which are publicly accessible and free to use for all electric vehicle users. Moreland is one of eight councils to take part in the Victorian Electric Vehicle Trial, an initiative of the Victorian government, to understand how the technology could impact and benefit the state. Through the electric vehicle trial, the state government invested close to $50,000 to create the council’s electric vehicle hub in Coburg. At the hub are two standard electric vehicle chargers and one electric vehicle fast charger, which can recharge an electric car in 40 minutes. It takes up to six hours to charge an electric car using a standard charge. Electric cars can generally drive around 100 kilometres on a single charge. While many electric car owners charge their vehicles at home, those without a garage and therefore an inability to charge at home, rely on electric charge stations. Since July last year there have been 2237 visits to the municipality’s charge stations, which are all currently free to use. Moreland greens councillor Samantha Ratnam bought an electric car last year. She said because she only has street parking, she could not have bought the car if the charge stations were not in the municipality. “The only reason we could have made the purchase is because of the charge stations,” she said. “The network of stations is brilliant in Moreland.” Australian Electric Vehicle Association Costa Tzalis said it costs about $5 to charge an electric car to drive around 100kms. He said better infrastructure is key to more Australians choosing electric cars over petrol-powered cars, particularly in the inner city. “For inner-city residents who may not have a garage to charge their car in overnight, fast-charge infrastructure is vital to enable their take up of electric vehicles,” he said. The association estimates there are around 1700 hybrid and “pure” electric cars currently driven in Australia, plus around 3500 scooters and motorbikes.
