High David, Ben and All,

Ben is correct you'll need a 4.5-1 to 7-1 total gearing. If we don't
know what you are coupling it to, how does one tell you how too?
Smart if you have it is keep the VW trans and just makes things
easier. And if you get in a jam in first you can near pull out or anything
starting up the worst hill, your driving design spec.
Your coupler would be the VW clutch center spline welded, etc to
whatever motor shaft you have.
I just make the VW trans clutch side up with the coupler with an
alum plate or say 2 - 1''x3'' alum tubes, Start the motor on 12vdc and move it
around until the least vibration, most rpm. Then lock, drill, bolt that.
Bugs suck aero wise so forget anything but a very short or emergency
above 50mph as your range will be cut by 50% or more. But as a 35- 50 mph
town car they are very hard to beat for low cost EV driving, commuting, etc.
Now if you want more speed get a Karman Ghia does very well. Or
later get a cool but dead and aero kitcar or a BrubakerBox style body.
A 1 box aero sportvan EV with gull wing door would be killer I
hope to do in the future.
For a motor the larger 6.7'' series are good and plentiful in
forklift shops though make sure they have bearings on both ends. Ones without
bearings you can install one with some metal work or buy another end plate with
the bearing. I get them for $50-100 working. Take a battery, cables with you.
EV's cost by the pound. By going light batteries, motors,
controller, etc all cost less to much, much less for the same range.
The key to speed in an EV is aero.

                                      Jerry Dycus

I should have added that I am looking at running a clutchless single speed
gearbox around 3:1 final drive. Dach.
