Electric RaceAbout ran annual tests on the legendary Nürburgring
Nordschleife track recently. The electric sports car, piloted by Jesse
Krohn, completed the 20,8 kilometre track in 8:01.41 seconds, setting its
best time to date.

“Project E-RA” is a research vehicle of Helsinki Metropolia University of
Applied Sciences. This car has been designed from a clean sheet of paper to
adopt the latest technology of electric powertrains and battery systems. The
Electric RaceAbout has been developed over the years, setting various speed
runs and records. Earlier this year the electric road legal sports car
reached an average top speed of 281,36 km/h.

The team continued improving the performance and reduced the weaknesses of
the car last year. Among the improvements are active rear wing control,
suspension and an ABS brake system. The Torque Vectoring control system of
the motors has also been improved since last year.

14_electric_raceabout_frontDuring the recent run at Nordschleife, Jesse
Krohn, a young Finnish VLN- series driver had the honour to lap the ‘green
hell’. “The driveability of the vehicle was good regarding its weight and
the acceleration from 100 to 200 km/h was very convincing,” says Krohn, who
drove the vehicle for the first time.

The testing period led to the second fastest lap around the Nordschleife
track in the street legal electric vehicle group. The unpredictable Eifel
climate didn’t worked in their favour as the car was on the track only three
times in four days. “The low amount of laps did not help me get accustomed
to the vehicle,” he continued. “Also, we had to start every lap with cold
tyres and brakes.”

During the fastest lap, the battery of the vehicle heated up more than the
team anticipated and the battery output power had to be limited halfway.
Additional laps would have helped to optimize the vehicle setup, so it seems
there is still potential for a faster lap time.

The best time for an electric road legal vehicle on Nordschleife still
remains with Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS Electric Drive in 7:56.2 seconds.

Electric Race About
After 120 years of motoring, the exploded global road traffic is now facing
the necessity of radical changes. A lot of things have to be done better, or
at least in different way. Thanks to the hybrid vehicles, electric
powertrains are developing progressively. However, there is no reason to
wait for better energy storage systems, the new electric car architecture
has to be taken on the CAD screen now, not tomorrow.
