In the mid to late 1990s, Green Motorworks in Alameda CA converted some early '90s Escorts (Bruce probably remembers these). At least a couple had automatics. Green simply clamped the (mechanically operated, IIRC) kickdown so that it was permanently on. The shift points weren't ideal, but I suspect they were better than they would have been otherwise. Range was not very good, roughly 20% less than similar cars with manual transmissions, though other factors may have played into that.
