Thefts ... — Police found a stolen car on south Highway 52 over Interstate 494 Nov. 17. It was a 2014 Nissan LEAF with no license plates, plastic on the floors and a window broken out. The officer guessed it was from a dealership. At the dealership, there were tracks and footprints leading to an empty stall, where there was broken glass. Presumably, the 100 percent electric vehicle had been abandoned when the LEAF thief got frightened; he certainly didn’t “run out of gas.” Nissan lists the car’s gas mileage at 126 mpge, or “miles per gallon equivalent” of power produced, as it uses no liquid fuel. — Three work vehicles were broken into, but only one had items missing Nov. 17 on Dickman Trail — a $150 drill, $150 saw and $100 drill ... — On Nov. 21, a woman reported a theft from her car. Her suitcase and duffel bag, each worth $150, and about $500 in clothes, were missing. Plus, her window was smashed — a $400 repair. South St. Paul Damage — Though nothing appeared the be missing after his car was broken into, a 58-year-old South St. Paul man is now stuck with the bill for a busted-out window on his car. He reported it Dec. 1 along the 400 block of Third Avenue. Arrest ... Thefts — On Dec. 1 along the 300 block of Seventh Avenue, a 54-year-old local man left his car unattended and unlocked in the alley for about 15 minutes. During that small window of time, a duffel bag containing medical gloves, paperwork and urine sample cups were stolen. The man drove around to see if anyone was carrying his bag to no avail. Because no one was in the alley parked the car, he suspected one of the neighbors took the bag. — At a local car dealership Nov. 27, an employee reported the theft of four tires from a 2007 Cadillac Escalade. The car was left on cinder blocks in the lot ... — One of a few thefts from cars the last week in November, a man reported someone smashed a window on his vehicle and stole a backpack containing his school computer on Nov. 25 along the 200 block of West Grand Avenue. — Nov. 28, a resident left her car unattended while it warmed up along the 200 block of Frost Street West. It was swiftly stolen. She had left it out there for about 20 minutes. Police noted her driveway opens onto a busy street with lots of traffic. Suspicious activity — A 24-year-old South St. Paul woman and a 27-year-old South St. Paul man tried to run from police after a resident called in two people looking through vehicles along the 100 block of Ninth Ave N. Fortunately for police who ran after them, the woman’s footprints led right to her. At first the woman said she was only waiting for a ride, but the officer pointed out she was out of breath. She admitted that she ran, but only because the guy she was with, a well-known repeat offender, had also run ... — Here’s another example of snow as a surprisingly helpful crime-fighting tool. A 24-year-old South St. Paul man, another 24-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, both with no known address, were recently charged for tampering with a motor vehicle. An area resident noticed footprints in the snow around her residence, garage and vehicles, and decided to call police, summoning them to the 100 block of Park Street West at about 4 a.m. Nov. 24. Police were able to follow the footprints in the snow around the area. The shoe prints stopped at other cars, which showed signs that someone had tampered with them, and then they led to a home on First Avenue South. There were three young adults there who denied tampering with the cars, but their shoes were still wet and the patterns on the bottom matched the prints found in the snow. It appeared that the trio was staying with a 50-year-old disabled man, who didn’t seem quite aware of what was going on, but just agreed with whatever the younger people said. Shortly thereafter, a resident reported the ignition in her vehicle was broken. Footprints from all three suspects were found around the car. On Nov. 26, the older man answered the door, insisted he was home alone, but an officer found the woman in a bedroom. Then one of the men came by. The officer told them they were going to be charged with tampering with a vehicle and property damage. Damage ... Thefts — A woman reported Nov. 26 that her truck was rummaged through overnight. Tools and medication were stolen from her car along the 1100 block of Macarthur Avenue. — A car was rummaged through overnight Nov. 26-27 along the 400 block of Arion Street East. Several items were stolen. — At an apartment complex Nov. 27 along the 1000 block of Waterloo Avenue, a resident reported that vehicles in the parking lot were gone through overnight. Nothing was missing in her car, as the car had been stolen recently and totally cleaned out. The rear of the caller’s brother’s car was found jacked up, but nothing was missing. — A 2001 bronze-colored Pontiac Bonneville was stolen overnight Nov. 27-28 along the 900 block of Christensen avenue. Public assist ... Suspicious activity — A garage was broken into Nov. 27-28 overnight along the 200 block of Hurley Street East. There was no damage, but it was clear that someone had rummaged through the car in the detached garage ...
