Only big name eco-conscious fleets will see the e-NV's appeal
]

While some mainstream car makers are still pussy-footing around the idea of
selling a mass-produced electric vehicle, Nissan is steamrollering ahead
with its second – the e-NV200.

The Leaf set the standard for EVs in 2011 with a mile range that should
satisfy most commutes and a clean, refreshing design that practically bashed
the eco-stick round the head of anyone that set their peepers on it.

So it’s no surprise that the e-NV200 uses the same all-electric powertrain
along with a few interior features, most notably the driver display.

Load-lugging Leaf

It’s essentially the regular NV200 van but rather than running on dirty
diesel, it’s powered by electricity and emits nothing more than a gentle,
barely audible hum as it breezes along.

If you’re looking to the e-NV200 Combi as a more capacious substitute for
the Leaf then prepare to be disappointed. Range is reduced, the interior is
aloof, it’s slower and less satisfying to drive.

However, it does have its place and would excel when based at an airport or
a university campus, adequately shifting five people and their luggage a
decent distance before needing an electric top-up (80% charge possible in 30
minutes).

The e-NV200 would also be suitable for workers doing a set amount of miles
every day.

The complete absence of CO2 emissions means no road tax but also a positive
image boost for any companies keen to be seen doing their bit for the
environment.

Super easy to drive

We likened it to a Leaf with a van dropped on its head after our first drive
in June, which in hindsight wasn’t entirely accurate.

The five-seater Combi’s handling is unmistakably van-like. There is
naturally a heft-load more body roll and you get the sense its size hampers
its agility but the turning circle is only 0.2metres larger than the Leaf’s
10.6m. Nissan has tinkered with the exterior here and there but from the
street, it still falls squarely in the van category.

Equally van-like is the interior. Gone is the Leaf’s creamy cabin, replaced
by darker harder surfaces in anticipation for the tougher life that vans
typically suffer. The driver display and touchscreen sat nav is identical to
what you’d find in the Leaf though.

The e-NV200 is super easy to drive and can reach 62mph from a standing start
in 14 seconds with a top speed of 76mph. That’s 2.5 seconds slower than the
Leaf, which can also reach 90mph when pushed to the limit, but it’s enough
for any responsible on-site driver. Plus, excessive acceleration will only
damage range.

Speaking of which. In the right weather and driven on ideal roads with the
kindest right foot, the current Nissan Leaf can cover up to 124 miles on a
full single charge. Sadly, the e-NV200 is pretty much a bit block and its
less aerodynamic shape hacks 18 miles from its maximum range to 106.

Things are made worse by the fact that we’re driving it in the winter, one
of the UK’s warmest winters on record admittedly, but the colder climes mean
that even after sitting on charge for eight hours with just myself onboard
and no cargo, the e-NV200 struggles to offer much more than 70 miles.

Usual features like an eco mode and regenerative braking do help nudge up
range but still, the reading refuses to climb out of the low 70s. Tricks
like switching off the heaters also help but this is December, I don’t want
to roll up looking like Frosty the Snowman.

It means that my 40 mile daily commute is easily manageable but any
unforeseen detours or additional mileage sparked a few squeaky bum ‘will I
make it?’ moments.

But what about the hundreds of chargepoints knocking about? They’re
wonderful if you have the correct Type 2 fast charger required for the
majority of them, but we only have the bog standard three-pin wall charger.

There are other electric vans on the market namely Renault’s Kangoo Z.E. but
they lack the consideration taken by Nissan in terms of driveability and
practicality.

Verdict
British Gas was won over and bought in a hundred of the things and as we
said halfway through 2014, the e-NV200 does work for big name fleets such as
the aforementioned energy supplier and FedEx. But as a load-lugging Leaf
replacement, the e-NV200 falls flat.

e-NV200 at a glance:

Like:
+ Flexible and practical load area
+ Smooth and satisfying electric drive
+ No CO2 means no road tax

No like:
- Cold weather seriously damages range
- Interior firmly in the van camp
- Difficult to recommend to private customers. Fleet appeal only.
