((Alan Dep/Marin Independent Journal)) ] Plans to build an electric vehicle dealership and service center in downtown Los Gatos have been filed with the town and, if approved, the project would result in big changes to the gateway intersection of Highway 9 and N. Santa Cruz Avenue. The plans for the so-called "North Santa Cruz@Highway 9" project were filed by architect Kenneth Rodrigues and property owner representative Joey McCarthy. Neither McCarthy nor Rodrigues returned phone calls from the Weekly-Times by deadline. An online 3D illustration of the project very clearly shows a spot for a nameplate that right now just says "name," begging the question, "Whose name will go there?" It could be Tesla Motors. Last May, then-mayor Steve Leonardis raised eyebrows during his "State of the Town" address when he announced, "Tesla Motors is looking for a home in Los Gatos." The proposed project at 201-225 Los Gatos-Saratoga Road includes the property now occupied by the PostalMate store, a liquor store, the former SV Home real estate building and an insurance office. Those buildings would all be demolished. They would be replaced with two new buildings. One would include a 4,896-square-foot showroom and design studio, while the other would be an 8,324-square-foot service area. Plans also call for a 4,036-square-foot upper office area, for a total of 17,256 square feet of construction. According to senior town planner Jennifer Savage, the buildings would be "connected by a second-story parking area." The online drawings show 23 stalls for rooftop parking, with total parking set at 71 spots. The property is just over three-quarters of an acre and was rezoned last year, paving the way for the proposed dealership.
