Asher is a member of the Tucson Electric Association and travels through Arizona's 15 counties with his electric vehicle annually. ] Despite plunging prices at the pump, early electric vehicle adopters like Jerry Asher remain as resolute as ever that they are on the right side of history. Even as cars continue to become more fuel efficient, Asher, who holds a master’s degree in history, espouses his view that choosing to go electric is as much historical as it is economical. “We’re plugging in because look at all this solar energy going to waste,” Asher said during a sunny Wednesday afternoon as he waited for his 2011 Nissan Leaf to recharge at the Lawley Chevrolet dealership on Fry Boulevard.
