Electric car advocates and employers are just starting to understand how to
manage EV charging at work. Should a company install a lot of Level 1 charge
points or fewer, more expensive Level 2 chargers? And what about DC fast
chargers? Should they be part of the mix as well?

An analysis by Plug In America suggests that the least expensive Level 1
chargers are the best use of company resources, because most employees won’t
be moving their cars during the normal work day and a Level 1 charger can
replenish most if not all EV batteries in that time. An additional
consideration is that if each EV has its own Level 1 unit, employees will
not need to leave their work place to move their car during the day.

Level 2 chargers are roughly twice as fast as Level 1 equipment, but that
extra speed may be unnecessary during a typical workday. Besides, the most
recent data shows that most EV owners live close enough to work that they
can drive to and from the office without recharging. The majority of them
recharge their cars overnight at home and have no need for a charger at
work.

Plug In America recommends that an employer who installs charging stations
for its employees price the use of the equipment somewhat higher than the
prevailing rate. That will encourage workers to recharge their cars at home
when utility rates are lowest.

One of the issues confronting EV drivers today is the proper etiquette for
using a public charging station. If there are only a limited number of
chargers available, is is OK to plug in and walk away for 8 hours? If you
need to be charged up, is it permissible to unplug the cord from another car
and plug it into yours? It’s not hard to imagine fist fights in the
employees’ parking lot before these questions get answered.

Plug In America suggests that lots of inexpensive Level 1 charge points are
the proper solution for charging EVs at work. If there are Level 2 or DC
fast chargers available, they should be out front where people visiting the
work place temporarily can use them for a short period of time before
getting back on the road.
