I'm much more interested in the car sharing and station car concepts. Rather than owning an EV and letting some giant faceless corporation exploit me and it (and I use the word "exploit" quite deliberately), I'd rather let a local cooperative own the car I drive daily and maintain it for me. Part of the best car sharing schemes: If I need a pickup to get some lumber at the lumberyard, I can trade my little commuter EV for a truck - either EV or ICE - for a day or two. If I want to take a long driving vacation, I can swap my EV for an ICE minivan. I might get back the same commuter EV when I get back from vacation, but I might also get one that someone else just swapped for a moving van. That doesn't reall matter to the me. The car sharing company does the maintenance, watches the battery capacity, and so on. I just pay a monthly fee and drive. Of course this requires a little advance planning. You wouldn't expect a car sharing service to do any of this without an advance reservation (though that would be really nice, wouldn't it?). So it probably won't suit those folks who, for whatever reason, insist on having a vehicle that can immediately meet almost every possible need they might have. :-( The other potential problem with car sharing schemes also attends your proposal. Increasingly, big companies just can't seem to resist spying on their customers. Call me a tinfoil hat, but on principle, I don't want to be spied on. I don't use supermarket "loyalty" cards for the same reason. Idle chat: It's odd that your "driverless EVs" post crossed when it did. Today I went to order some parts from an AV supply company. For some reason their website wasn't playing nice with my browser. Normally I'd just boot up another OS or start a different browser, and that would usually handle the problem. But there on the page was their 800 number, so for once I ordered my stuff over the phone. I'd gotten so used to point-click-done that I'd forgotten how pleasant it can be to talk to a human being when ordering something. That was nice. So I guess that I'm one of those folks who resist. No, I don't think I'm interested in letting a big corporation, FOR SURE not Uber or Lyft, use my EV when I'm not driving it. Nor am I interested in even riding in a driverless taxicab, be it EV or ICEV. And get off my lawn.
