Homeless in Vancouver: After landing, the aliens do a bit of sightseeing

Okay, so the the little three-wheeled UDO (Unidentified Driving Object) I
just saw motoring down West Broadway Avenue wasn’t an alien ground effect
vehicle doing reconnaissance ahead of the invasion—unless the aliens were
the plan-ahead variety and took the time to get B.C. licence plates.

With its single back wheel and a distinctive body that vaguely resembles a
dimpled aircraft wheel fairing, it looked like a gussied-up motorcycle
trike.

In fact it was a Myers Motors NmG, a U.S.-made three-wheeled electric
vehicle (NmG = no more gas). The NmG design has been in production since
1999, when it was called the Corbin Sparrow.

The NmG is a Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEV), which has been described as a
personal electric vehicle (PEV), in an attempt to define its narrow
aspiration to be used for inner-city commuting.

Two other examples of “personal” electric vehicles that I’ve seen driving
around Vancouver are the high-performance Tango T600, manufactured just
across the border in in Washington State and the hybrid bicycle/electric
Carzari Lexicle, handmade by a local resident named Stuart. The Carzari
might properly fit under the U.S.-defined category of low speed
neighbourhood electric vehicles (NEV).

It seems to me that these tiny little electric vehicles are not the answer
to a glaring immediate need so much as a hopeful gamble; a kind of Boolean
statement of faith in the truth of peak oil:

IF[oil = expensive
AND batteries = good enough
AND consumers = motivated]
Create new electric vehicle category [get rich]
ELSE IF[Go (Bankrupt)]
END IF
