The special paint absorbs ultra-violet light given off by the sun and uses it to illuminate the car for between eight and 10 hours at night, making it easier for other motorists to see the Nissan Leaf. Nissan worked with Hamish Scott of Starpath to invent the paint, which is made from a 'secret formula' of organic materials, including a very rare solid, odourless and chemically and biologically inert natural material called Strontium Aluminate. The paint is yet to reach commercial production, but if it does Nissan claims it will last for to 25 years so there's no need to worry about the it glowing less brightly over the lifetime of the car. Glow in the dark paint on cars is nothing new, but this is the first example of a car manufacturer directly applying it to a vehicle. It was also used for road markings in the Netherlands as part of a plan to reduce energy consumption. Is glow in the dark paint practical on a car? Perhaps not, but it is sure to mesmerise younger generations as you pass on by. Nissan Leaf glow in the dark paint pictures [© recombu.com] ... Nissan Leaf owners may well be glowing with eco-pride at owning a 100% emission-free vehicle, and now the Japanese firm has created a special Leaf that can do just that. Working with inventor Hamish Scott they have created STARPATH, a special paint that absorbs UV light during the day and then releases it at night, glowing for up to 10 hours. Unlike other glow paints STARPATH is made from entirely organic materials, with the very rare Strontium Aluminate, which is colourless, odourless and inert, playing a key role in its construction. The glow-in-the-dark Leaf project is designed to highlight how many Leaf owners have used the reduced running costs from their electric cars to pay for solar panels - effectively allowing them to charge their car for free. Leaf owner Ian Finch is one of those who has combined the savings offered by running an all-electric vehicle with solar panels to power his home. "Running the Nissan Leaf costs a sixth of the amount we'd pay to run a diesel or petrol car," he said. "Overall, we are probably using 25% less electricity thanks to our solar panels and it's a fantastic experience to be able to drive the Leaf using electricity that's been produced completely for free."
