And as any tech company will tell you, happy geeks are productive geeks. Usually, that recognition comes in the form of a pay rise, promotion or perhaps a one-off bonus. Or perhaps employee perks like free laundry, childcare, caffeinated beverages, in-house a-la carte restaurant, car-share schemes and flexi-hours. Over in China however, one firm is going one step further, rewarding high-flying employees with a brand-new Tesla Model S electric car. Would you like a bonus like this? Yes please. Enter LianWifi.com, a Chinese tech startup backed by game development house Shanda. Despite still being a startup company, its highly popular WiFi Master Key software allows users to automatically detect and seamlessly connect to a dizzying array of different wireless access points without needing to know or remember a myriad of different access keys. As of the end of September last year, WiFi Master Key had recorded more than 500 million downloads across various different platforms, with 230 million monthly active users and an offered users Internet access through 120 million different public and private WiFi hotspots. As TechNode (via Autobloggreen) reports, the company has chosen to reward its employees for the company’s massive success by giving out Tesla Model S electric sedans to each and every employee who had been with the company more than four months. While the firm itself won’t specific the exact number of employees who will stand to get a new, super-sexy ride, a spokesperson said that it would be ‘dozens’ out of the fifty or so people currently working for the firm. Confirming that it has spent somewhere around RMB30 million ($.4.8 million) on the bonuses, the company says the first eight Tesla Model S sedans have already been delivered to its top employees. No catch: the firm is rewarding employees who have been at the firm more than four months with a brand new electric ride. The gift of a brand-new Tesla Model S might seem a little unlikely given the way in which bonuses are generally treated elsewhere in the world, but as TechNode explains, China’s booming Internet revolution and software-driven tech bubble has led many Chinese tech startups and companies to offer unbelievable bonuses to loyal employees at the end of every year. In fact, one employee at Baidu — one of China’s most wealthy and well-known tech firms — recently received a bonus equivalent to 50 months’ of his usual salary. Meanwhile, an employee at Alibaba recently boasted on line that his bonus was more than 100 months’ of his usual pay. Paying employees with a car rather than money is certainly not unheard of, but as far as we know this is the first time a Chinese company has used the luxury Tesla Model S as a well-earned bonus. Given the heavy incentives currently available in China for plug-in car purchases, we’re guessing both employees and company stand to benefit from this particular expression of gratitude rather than the usual cash-based year-end bonus. “Talent is the key determinant for the success of high-tech companies,” said LianWifi’s founder Chen Danian of the four-wheeled bonuses. “Through this move, we want to show how much we value and respect our talent.” And we have to admit he might be right.
