With a 200 mile range, Ford's newest upcoming EV might be a winner if priced

Details are a bit scant on the latest news coming from Ford, but it looks
like the blue oval is ready to join the electric party. **According to a

Ford Will Unveil Chevrolet Bolt Competitor This Year
By Todd Lassa - March 3, 2015 ...
Ford's official word is that the story is not accurate.

] (March. 3, 2015) Ford is looking to unveil its own electric vehicle that
will compete alongside the Chevrolet Bolt sometime later this year. Range
anxiety is the biggest concern for any electric car manufacturer so Ford is
promising a lofty 200-mile range. With the Geneva Auto show currently going
down and the New York Auto Show just a few weeks away, the only safe bet for
Ford right now would be a reveal at the LA Auto Show in sunny California.

If you didn't already know, Ford already offers an all-electric option with
its 2015 Ford Focus Electric. But with a paltry 76-mile range, it hardly is
a competitor to the Chevrolet Bolt or Tesla Model S. Any good electric car
is supposed to promise range good enough for a trip to San Francisco from
Los Angeles given a quick stop at one of Tesla's modern superchargers. At
the very least, range should be adequate for a full day's use. When Car and
Driver took the Ford Focus Electric out for a spin, they were impressed with
its driving dynamics and praised it for being the most natural feeling EV's
in a comparison with the Chevrolet Spark, VW e-Golf, Kia Soul EV and Nissan
Leaf.

For Ford to come up with a 200-mile EV at such short notice, look for Ford
to rehash the Focus EV with a bigger and more powerful set of batteries.
Currently, the Ford Focus EV is priced just under $30,000. With improved
batteries and a revamped recharging system, look for prices to peak $35,000
easily. California residents will be happy to know that the $7,500 federal
tax credit still exists. Additionally, for Fresno residents residing in the
San Joaquin Valley (or any other San Joaquin Valley city,) there's still a
$3,000 additional rebate available for EV car purchases as funding for that
program has not been fully used up yet.

Ford Will Reportedly Show A 200-Mile EV This Year (UPDATE)
Damon Lavrinc [20150302]

With both the Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model 3 set to arrive in 2017,
[strike Ford is finally getting ready to unveil its own electric vehicle
packing a 200-mile range. /strike]
UPDATE: Ford says the report by Automobile is not accurate.

After publishing this report Ford has issued the following statement: "We do
not comment on speculation but can confirm these reports are not accurate."

According to a very fact-light report by Automobile, Ford's EV is set to
debut later this year. There's no word on when, but with Geneva in progress
and the New York auto show just a month away, an unveiling at the LA auto
show in EV-friendly California this November is a safer bet.

Based on the "200-plus-mile" range Automobile is citing, this likely isn't a
re-do of the Focus Electric. To hit that range target, Ford would need a
dedicated EV architecture to house the batteries, either a T-like
arrangement similar to the Volt [pih]/Bolt [EV] or a flat slab of batteries
spanning the floor, ala the Tesla Model S [EV].

Beyond creating a dedicated platform, the next obvious question is who Ford
will pick as a battery supplier. Compact Power, Inc. provided the cells for
the Focus Electric. It's a subsidiary of LG Chem, which is producing the
lithium-ion packs for the Chevrolet Volt, previously signed an agreement
with Hyundai, and has a manufacturing facility in Holland, Michigan.
Although that plant has had some, well, issues in the past.

Regardless, for all of Ford's talk of evolving the company, a competitive EV
has to be in the cards as we're moving beyond the bandaid approach of
slapping a battery in the trunk of an existing car and calling it done.

Ford Building A 200-Mile EV To Compete With The Chevy Bolt
Christopher DeMorro [2015/03/04]

Though the Ford Focus Electric has been on the market nearly as long as the
Chevy Volt and Nissan LEAF, it hasn’t had nearly as much success. That’s
mostly Ford’s fault, as the Blue Oval put almost no marketing muscle behind
the Focus Electric, and it always seemed a few steps behind the competitors
with things like price cuts.

Yet that could change if a report from Automobile Magazine is true. Ford is
supposedly building a 200-mile electric car to compete with the Chevy Bolt
and Tesla Model III, with a price tag somewhere below $40,000. Furthermore,
it will come to market sometime in 2017, with a big reveal scheduled for
later this year. That would mean it would release within months of both the
Chevy and the Tesla, putting Ford in a good place to actually compete for
electric vehicle buyers this time around.

Why the sudden about-face on EVs? I think a lot of it has to do with
newly-minted CEO Mark Fields, who is inheriting a much healthier company
than his predecessor, giving him more room to take product chances. The
Focus Electric was a compliance car in every sense of the word, and Ford
treated it as such, ceding the early EV market to Nissan and Chevy. But with
electric vehicle sales gaining steam and a nationwide network of chargers
After just a few weeks on the job, Fields told the media that if Ford was to
make an electric car, it would have to be a “Tesla for the masses”, and that
appears to have been more than just a hint of what to expect. Also, Ford’s
efforts to take on the Toyota Prius with the C-Max hybrid fell flat, which
may have it taking a different approach…which hopefully includes a
purpose-built EV platform.

There’s also Ford’s long-standing rivalry with Chevy to consider too. The
Blue Oval and Bowtie brands have been going head-to-head for decades now in
just about every market segment, and Ford would be hard pressed to explain
why it let GM widen its advantage with EVs. Ford bought itself some time
with the Focus Electric and Fusion/C-Max Energi models, but with upstarts
like Tesla and old rivals like GM making electric cars more popular, and
viable than ever, it’s about time Ford got it’s shit together.

Maybe I’ll even change my mind about what my next car will be.
