Aston Martin has completed its trio of new cars for Geneva by revealing the
DBX: an experimental, all-electric crossover aimed at ‘challenging the
conventions of the luxury GT segment’…

Back to the drawing board
It’s been six years since the Geneva reveal of the ill-received Lagonda SUV
concept – but now, Aston Martin can leave that particular debacle firmly in
the past, as it unveils a new take on the Grand Touring genre. According to
new Aston CEO Andy Palmer, the DBX “envisages a world, perhaps a world not
too far away, when luxury GT travel is not only stylish and luxurious but
also more practical, more family-friendly and more environmentally
responsible.” The all-electric nature of the concept might not be ideal for
long-distance touring given current technology, but the lack of a colossal
V12 up front would certainly free up luggage space – the DBX’s in-wheel
motors and underfloor batteries mean both fore and aft compartments are
vacant for passenger belongings.

While Aston admits the DBX is clearly not production ready, Palmer sees the
silhouette of such a vehicle on the horizon: “We will, in due course, be
entering a car into the new DBX space.” By the time it arrives, that
ultra-luxury SUV market is certainly going to be well populated.

Aston Martin crossover may deepen Daimler partnership

(Reuters) - Aston Martin on Tuesday announced plans for a luxury crossover
SUV that may draw more heavily on its partnership with Daimler, as the
British sports car maker confirmed moves to raise more capital and expand
into new vehicle categories.

Aston has secured about 150 million pounds ($230 million) in additional
funding, Chief Executive Andy Palmer said in an interview at the Geneva car
show before unveiling an electric DBX concept car prefiguring the new
vehicle, expected by 2019.

Palmer said Aston's main shareholders, private equity groups
Investindustrial and Investment Dar of Kuwait, had agreed to back the
capital hike and range expansion first reported by Reuters in December.

He acknowledged that the future production SUV model could use a four-wheel
drive architecture from 5 percent shareholder Daimler, which is already
supplying Aston with electronics and V8 engines from its AMG performance
division under a 2013 deal.

"It's not ruled out, nor is it agreed," Palmer said, without elaborating. A
Daimler spokesman declined to comment.

The cash injection, in addition to 500 million pounds already earmarked for
a revamp of the core sports car lineup, will enable Aston to hit a
"consistently sustainable" level of spending on new models, Palmer said.

Held back by ageing models and weak investment, the company has missed out
on a global luxury car boom. Last year it delivered 4,000 cars, far short of
its 7,300 record in 2007.

In a departure from its pure sports-car heritage, Aston is going ahead with
four-door luxury sedans under a revived Lagonda badge as well as SUV-styled
vehicles designed to increase its appeal to younger consumers, women and
faster-growing markets.

"The reality is that we have to expand our customer base, we have to address
the issue of our (CO2) emissions and we have to appeal to a generation of
kids who have grown up with SUVs – particularly in places like China,"
Palmer said.

Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche has previously indicated readiness to share SUV
architecture with Aston, while dismissing speculation that the German
premium carmaker may eventually increase its stake in the British brand.

The two-door crossover unveiled in Geneva is also Aston's first all-electric
and all-wheel drive vehicle, while keeping some of the sleekness of its DB9
sports-car stablemate.

Aston Martin boasts of introducing the understated DBX concept, with an
electrically all-wheel drive GT model packed with the latest electronic
gadgets. A surprising feature with the mirrors is that they are not mirrors
but video cameras which channel the video to the inside of each of the
doors. Another great feature is a touchscreen resides at the center of the
sturdy steering wheel. There are also two arrays of unique solar panels at
the rear.

This DBX would like to attract more women and younger people who have not
yet tried an Aston Martin ...

Electric Aston Martin crossover targets women.

Aston Martin is widely known as a purveyor of red-blooded luxury sports
cars, but the English manufacturer's latest product is designed to represent
much more.

"We want to appeal more to women," chief executive Andy Palmer declared at
the Geneva motor show on Tuesday.

The platform for Aston's new direction is the DBX concept, a high-riding
electric crossover designed to "challenge convention". The divisive
prototype is still a concept for now, however Palmer says it provides a
portent to Aston's future model direction.

"Over our history the brand has mainly sold to men. In 102 years, we've sold
70,000 cars … but only 3500 of those were sold to women," he said.

"There are also factors to consider with Gen Y and Gen Z, and the way that
we look at cars is changing. So we need to make a sports car that addressed
those factors in the future.

"Women have a part in between 60 and 80 per cent of household buying
decisions. Having a higher vehicle, a crossover, and getting that centre of
gravity up and making it more approachable, easier to get in and out of –
they're ideal factors.

"We have a car that's designed for female needs: a slightly smaller steering
wheel, more throw on the steering rack, more throw on the seats – this is
all about delivering the car that is always an Aston Martin in that it is
powerful and beautiful, but it is appealing to a female audience."

The all-wheel drive DBX Concept might be a crossover in height, but it is a
sports car in shape. Four seats are currently packaged inside the three-door
layout; Palmer says a production version would have five doors.

The DBX receives modern technology such as drive-by-wire electric steering
and bespoke driver and passenger head-up displays. Active LED exterior
lights, carbon ceramic brakes with a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS)
and rear view cameras in place of conventional mirrors also feature.

"This is the start of our second century plan," Palmer said.

"The strategy is not just about one car or another. For example, we take the
core sports car range and we count that volume at 7000 vehicles per year and
that continues to create the exclusivity of the sports cars.

"Secondly we introduce Lagonda, which is already in the Middle East and will
move into other countries. The third leg of the stall is that we needed a
new car for a new generation … it gives us a certain scale and a certain
volume."

comment I don't think any of the "features" they mention are specifically
designed for women's needs. Only thin\g I can think of that it would need is
a device on the door sill to stop dresses from getting caught in the door
and hanging outside the car.
