VW has announced that it has a new trim line for the e-Golf called the Limited Edition model and it will go on sale starting at $33,450. VW says that the Limited Edition is nearly $2000 less than the SEL and offers the same performance and versatility. The Limited Edition e-Golf will also be offered on a lease at $229 per month plus fees. The car uses the Modular Transverse Matrix platform as the other cars in the Golf family. Power comes from the compact electric motor and 24.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. That powertrain offers 115hp and 199-pound feet of torque. VW fits the car with standard 7.2kW charger that is capable of charging the battery pack to 80% in only 30 minutes. The e-Golf has three driving modes with normal, Eco, and Eco+ and three driver selectable regeneration modes. An electric parking brake, heated windshield, review camera, front and rear park distance control and more are standard on the Limited Edition model. The e-Golf is rated at 126 MPGe in the city and 105 MPGe on the highway. The EPA estimates a driving range of 83 miles on a single charge. The e-Golf Limited Edition is built on the same sporty Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform as the rest of the award winning Golf family. Changes compared with the SEL Premium models include 16-inch steel wheels in place of aluminum-alloys, halogen instead of LED headlights, cloth in place of leatherette seating surfaces, and deletion of the heat-pump system. Equipment and features that remain unchanged from the SEL Premium model include: - DC Fast Charging with the Combined Charging System (CCS) that allows up to 80 percent battery charge in 30 minutes - Standard 7.2kW onboard charger - Versatile cargo area, with 22.8 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats; 52.7 cubic feet with seats folded - Three driving profiles designed to preserve energy (“Normal”, “Eco”, and “Eco+”) and three driver-selectable regeneration modes - KESSY keyless access with push-button start - Navigation system - LED Daytime Running Lights - Climatronic automatic dual-zone climate control system - Electronic parking brake - Electrically heated windshield - Automatic headlights and wipers - Rearview camera - Front and rear Park Distance Control The e-Golf achieves an EPA-estimated Miles per Gallon of Gasoline Equivalent (MPGe) of 126 city, 105 highway, and 116 combined; the EPA estimates that range is 83 miles on a single charge. This makes the e-Golf the most fuel-efficient compact car in the U.S. according to the 2015 Most Fuel Efficient Cars by EPA Size Class (including electric vehicles) list. In addition to its EPA recognition, the e-Golf shares the 2015 Motor Trend Car of the Year and Green Car Reports “Best Car to Buy 2015” awards with the entire Volkswagen Golf family. To further improve the ownership experience, Volkswagen is taking a holistic approach to e-Mobility. This includes a collaboration with 3Degrees, a renewable energy services provider, to invest in carbon reduction projects to help offset the emissions created from Volkswagen e-Golf production, distribution and charging of the vehicle up to 36,000 miles of driving. Charging solutions from Bosch and Chargepoint, along with a new Roadside Assistance program and the VW Car-Net e-Golf app are designed to make owning the e-Golf a thoroughly reassuring, rewarding and enjoyable experience. It will sticker at $34,270 (including an $820 destination fee), almost $2,000 less than the higher-spec SEL trim level. It will be available for lease at $229 per month, according to the company. Like the SEL trim, the e-Golf Limited Edition will feature a 24.2-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, standard DC fast charger system, an 83-mile range and a host of standard features like navigation, keyless entry with push-button start, automatic climate control, an electrically heated windshield, rearview camera, and front and rear parking sensors. It will differ from the current e-Golf in that it will feature 16-inch steel wheels instead of aluminum ones, halogen headlamps instead of LED lights, cloth seats instead of faux leather and the deletion of a heat-pump system meant to speed cabin warmth on cold days. These minor de-contenting changes should help the car find a few more buyers as it becomes more widely available, but one has to wonder what these changes might do to the car's practical energy usage - LED headlamps consume less energy than incandescent halogen ones, and the lack of a heat pump could reduce the car's cold-weather range considerably. When the e-Golf was first released, VW said that adding the heat pump increased the e-Golf's winter range by nearly 20 percent, so eliminating it might be best suited to warm-weather climates.
